Yahya Abdul-Mateen II To Lead Marvel’s Wonder Man Disney Plus Series – Report

A few months after reports of a Wonder Man series coming to Disney+, the series seemingly has its lead. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, known for his DC-centric roles in the Aquaman movies and HBO’s Watchmen, has been tapped as the series lead for the upcoming Wonder Man series, according to Deadline.

Abdul-Mateen will be leading the series, presumably as Wonder Man–a many-faceted Marvel character who was both a hero and a villain (and an actor). Wonder Man (also known as Simon Williams) made his debut in Avengers #9 in 1964, created by Stan Lee, Don Heck, and Jack Kirby. Originally a villain of the Masters of Evil group, Williams worked for Baron Zemo and was a test subject for Zemo who gave Williams powers. Eventually, Williams left the group, became an actor, then an Avenger, and the brain pattern for Vision–that’s a whole other thing the MCU won’t tackle as Vision is Jarvis in the cinematic realm.

The new Wonder Man series is in development from Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi) and Andrew Guest (Hawkeye). The show will also feature Ben Kingsley reprising his Iron Man 3 and Shang-Chi role of Trevor Slattery. It will be hitting Disney+, which has really beefed up its Marvel catalog with series like Loki, She-Hulk, Moon Knight, and more recently, the Werewolf By Night special. Nothing else is known about Wonder Man at this time.

Abdul-Mateen’s next superhero role won’t be for Marvel though. He’ll be reprising his role of Black Manta in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. However, that isn’t expected to hit theaters until December 2023. James Was will return to direct the follow-up to the 2018 superhero movie, and little is known about the plot.

In other Marvel news, the first trailer for Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania arrived in late October. The video showed us our first look at Jonathan Majors as Kang the Conqueror and the character Bill Murray is playing–we still have no clue how that is. That movie is slated to hit theaters on February 17.
