The Office Reboot With A Key Player Is In The Works – Report

The Office is one of the most popular modern TV shows, and there has long been talk about rebooting the series. But will it ever happen? That remains to be seen, but a new report from media veterans Matthew Belloni and Jonathan Handel at Puck News claims that a reboot is, indeed, on the way.

Greg Daniels, who co-created the American version of The Office, is “set to do a reboot of The Office,” Belloni and Handel said, discussing upcoming projects that could come to light now that the WGA strike is coming to an end.

“A ton of high-profile movie scripts will come in. The industry will chug back to normal,” they said (via The Independent).

In 2022, Daniels told Collider that making The Office was “such a wonderful and rare experience.” He said he didn’t want go disappoint people with a lackluster reboot when the show still has an enormous fanbase of people watching reruns.

But as of 2022, Daniels said one idea he had for a reboot of The Office was for it to feature new characters in an “extension of the universe.” He said it could be similar to how how The Mandalorian is a spinoff of Star Wars, sharing the same universe but featuring many new characters. Daniels said at the time that he wasn’t sure if this would be something people would want for The Office. “It’s hard to tell,” he said.

The US Office had a challenging first season, and the show was reportedly nearly canceled. But the series gained momentum in Season 2 and became more and more popular, ultimately becoming a bonafide phenomenon. Daniels said in 2022 that he wasn’t sure if a reboot of The Office would be able to succeed if it didn’t hit the ground running.

“It’s like, do you want to wade through all the negativity in the beginning to get to the good part at the end? I don’t know,” Daniels said.

The Office, which was created by Ricky Gervais and adapted for the US by Daniels, starred Steve Carell as a bumbling paper company boss in Scranton, Pennsylvania. The show ran from 2005-2013, and also starred John Krasinski, Jenna Fischer, Leslie David Baker, Angela Kinsey, Brian Baumgartner, Kate Flannery, Phyllis Smith, Oscar Nunez, Ed Helms, B.J. Novak, Mindy Kaling, Craig Robinson, and Rainn Wilson in lead roles.

Carell has said a character like Scott would not fly in today’s climate with his off-color jokes.

It’s early days for any potential reboot of The Office in the US, but a new version of The Office is being made in Australia with a COVID twist.

Hollywood writers might soon be back to work with the WGA strike ending in an “exceptional” deal with movie and TV studios. Actors in the SAG-AFTRA union, however, remain on strike with no end in sight.
