Baldur’s Gate 3 – Wyrmway Puzzles And Legend Of Ansur Guide

Deep in the main city of Baldur’s Gate 3 rests a creature that has protected the realm for eons. Now, it’s up to you to find it, and perhaps ask for its aid. Our guide discusses the Baldur’s Gate 3 Wyrmway Puzzles and Legend of Ansur, a secret storyline arc with its own special requirements. Likewise, please be aware that this article contains spoilers.

How to Complete Legend of Ansur and the Wyrmway Puzzles in Baldur’s Gate 3

The Baldur’s Gate 3 Legend of Ansur and Wyrmway Puzzles are the culmination of Wyll’s companion quest: Blade of Frontiers. Here’s what we did in our campaign:

  • We saved the Tieflings in the Druid Grove during Act 1. Siding with Minthara and the Goblins causes Wyll to leave forever.
  • We rescued Zariel’s Asset (i.e. Mizora) in the Mind Flayer Colony in Act 2. Her death would cause Wyll to be trapped in the fires of Avernus.
  • Then, in Act 3, we considered Mizora’s proposal, and we rescued Duke Ravengard in the Iron Throne prison.

Long story short: Wyll and Mizora have to survive, and you must save Wyll’s father, Duke Ravengard. It’s Ravengard who’ll tell you about the dragon, Ansur, and he even hands you a book.

How to Solve the Legend of Ansur Book Puzzle

If you read the Baldur’s Gate 3 Legend of Ansur book, you’ll learn that the entrance to the Wyrmway is in Wyrm’s Rock Prison. As for the riddle, it has the following clue: “With a lightning shock, a true hero’s spark flickers. The torches alight! And wyrm’s eyes shall awake aglitter!”

Anyway, given that Gortash is now aware of your plans, several Flaming Fist soldiers will be defending the fortress. Your goal is to reach the prison by way of the large room with the waypoint. There, you’ll find a set of steps that lead down to the lower section.

Make a left to spot a dead end, which has two lanterns in the shape of a dragon’s head. Hit them with lightning spells quickly (make sure both have blue flames at the same time). This will reveal a hidden passageway.

The Wyrmway Puzzles and Trials

You’ve finally arrived at the Baldur’s Gate 3 Wyrmway dungeon, which has several trials for you to complete. We’ve organized them from the left-hand section going to the right. Note that failing to solve a puzzle correctly leads to a battle against several undead enemies.

Chamber of Justice

You see a shadowy figure in the center, while paintings adorn the walls. They tell the tale of a man who was caught stealing an apple. Now, you have to pronounce a sentence that’s proportionate to the crime.

Solution: Cast Remove Curse on the paintings blanketed by shadows, and pick “The Cell.” Drag and move it so you can place it in your inventory. Then, insert it in the empty plinth.

Chamber of Insight

There are three shades of advisors nearby. Beyond, there are three books that are fluttering around. You need to kill the advisor that would lead the city to ruin.

Solution: Click on hourglass button on your action bar to switch to turn-based mode. Then, cast Hold Monster (or a similar variant) on the flying books (i.e. turn-based mode makes it easier to target them). The books will fall on the ground, and you’ll be able to read the passages. One of the advisors has a darker and more sinister outlook, that of razing the lands of peoples that have been defeated already. The one that we had to eliminate was Suelto (i.e. the shade on the left), though it might be different for your playthrough.

Chamber of Strategy

This is the Baldur’s Gate 3 chess puzzle, and it might sound tricky at first. That’s because you need to win the game (i.e. destroy the black king’s piece) within three actions. During our “serious” attempt, we kept failing since we couldn’t even do a proper setup with our pieces. To be fair, we forgot to test if turn-based mode would work.

Solution: The quickest way is to simply cast a lightning spell on the black king piece. This will instantly destroy it, allowing you to complete this task.

Chamber of Courage

This isn’t really a puzzle, but a combat encounter. You just need to survive four rounds against elementals and myrmidons. Try to use Thunderwave or something similar since the enemies can still be pushed off the cliffside.

How to Beat Ansur

After completing the four Wyrmway puzzles in Baldur’s Gate 3, it’s time to head to the main chamber. There, you’ll see the rotting carcass of the dragon Ansur. A cutscene will play before and after this battle, but we won’t add further details so as not to spoil the big reveal.

Anyway, here’s what you need to know to defeat the Baldur’s Gate 3 Ansur dragon boss:

  • Ungroup and reposition party members individually. Otherwise, Ansur’s melee attack will hit multiple characters after the cutscene ends. Myrmidons also appear, and they’ll cast spells to damage your units.
  • Ansur has the Hoarding Energy effect, where it charges up electricity before unleashing a devastating blast that covers the entire arena. The high damage is enough to kill characters below 50 HP if they can’t protect themselves properly.
  • The best way to negate Ansur’s magic blast is to bring Gale or any character that has the Globe of Invulnerability spell. Plop the barrier and have your team huddle within its aura to survive the blow.
  • Once Ansur is finished casting, press on the attack further. Just watch out for blue circles on the ground since lightning will strike these areas.
Stay inside the Globe of Invulnerability to negate the ridiculous damage from Ansur's magical blast.

Legendary Rewards

Once you beat Ansur and gain more knowledge via a cutscene, you’ll complete the Baldur’s Gate 3 Wyrmway and Legend of Ansur objectives. You’ll receive a couple of legendary items to bolster your characters further.

Balduran’s Giantslayer – 6-19 slashing and necrotic damage; on hit, double the damage from your Strength modifier; gain advantage on attack rolls against large, huge, and gargantuan creatures; +3 weapon enchantment.

Helm of Balduran – Heals +2 HP at the beginning of every turn; +1 bonus to AC and saving throws; character can’t be stunned; attackers can’t land critical hits on the wearer.

With these goodies, it’s time to venture onward to clear the rest of the third act. Moreover, this also concludes Wyll’s Blade of Frontiers companion quest. You can decide on whether he’ll become the new Grand Duke of Baldur’s Gate or something else entirely.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is filled to the brim with activities and secrets. You’ll no doubt be part of an adventure that can take countless hours to complete. For other tips, you can visit our BG3 guides hub.
