Nintendo Switch Losing Twitch App Soon

The Nintendo Switch won’t have a Twitch app for much longer. Twitch has announced that the official Twitch app will be removed from the eShop on November 6. Anyone who currently has the app installed can continue to use it until support is dropped for everyone on January 31, 2024.

In a statement where it spelled Nintendo’s name incorrectly, Twitch said it recommends that people watch Twitch on their browser, mobile phone, or other device instead. Obviously, this is far from ideal for people who were enjoying Twitch on the Switch.

The Switch’s Twitch app, which launched in 2021, never supported broadcasting or the ability to subscribe to creators or send Bits. The Twitch app also never supported security or privacy settings, nor did it allow players to use Whispers. Users could browse and view live content and also watch video-on-demand programming via the app.

Twitch did not say why it is removing its app from Switch, but the company said in a statement to The Verge that it was a “difficult decision” to cut the app. “Nintendo remains a valued partner and we appreciate all of the support the Switch community has provided to Twitch and our streamers,” a spokesperson said.

The existing Twitch apps for Xbox and PlayStation consoles are unaffected and are staying online.

Nintendo is reportedly working on its next console right now, which could be released in 2024. Developers are already making games with it, apparently.
