Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is one of the most beloved comic-book films ever, and is one of the few to win an Oscar. In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, creative duo Phil Lord and Chris Miller have revealed some new details about the film’s sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

The second in a planned trilogy, Spider-Verse 2 will star Miles Morales yet again, a few years older and wiser. However, while the first film was all about other Spider-People invading his universe, this time, Miles will adventure across the multiverse himself. The film will also feature returning characters like Spider-Gwen and Peter B. Parker. Lord and Miller estimate that about 240 characters were designed for the film, so expect to see a lot of new faces.

Two major new characters include Oscar Isaac as Spider-Man 2099, who was teased in the credits of the first film. Jason Schwartzman will play a villain known as the Spot, who has the ability to create portals to different dimensions. Lord and Miller describe him as a classic cartoon baddy, similar to Wile E. Coyote. Despite the character’s goofy costume and appearance, Lord describes him as a “dark mirror” of Miles, because he wants to be taken seriously as a villain.

Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse will come to theaters on June 2, 2023.
